Longhouse shaped twig structure

Searsport Shores Oceanfront Campground

Ten people built a structure in two days. First space was cleared in the woods. A simple framework of rebar formed the foundation. Rebar is metal reinforcing bar used during in concrete structures. Seven rods were curved into a 'c' shape and each end was shoved into the ground about 3' apart in succession. Three 20 foot long rebars were set at right angles to the set of hoops. One at center top and one on either side about four feet from the 1st.

Maple, ash, cherry and other sturdy saplings and twigs were harvested from wooded areas near the site. Saplings were selected carefully and the wooded areas were protectivly thinned. Twigs and saplings were woven in and out between the rebar framework horizontally. We started at the bottom and worked our way up the sides.

A soft matting of woodchips will be placed inside, which will level off the area and prevent erosion. A removable canvas tarp will cover the center portion of the top giving the structure a waterproof roof for special occasions.

In a week or two flowering vines wil be planted and maybe some exotic and edible gourds. The site is somewhat shaded, and that limits the selection of planting possibilities.
